Hi there!

In this edition of our monthly newsletter, we are very excited to share the stories produced through our Online Creative Residency. The Residency brings people who want to gain storytelling skills in a professional setting together with mentors in a range of formats. The theme for 2025 is food, and the results are inspiring!

Plus, GIF IT UP is back once again: the world’s most joyful celebration of cultural heritage remixing! Every year, people from around the globe create GIFs from openly licensed heritage material and share them with the world. This year's theme? Also food! Submissions open on 1 October.

Finally, grab some tea and enjoy our featured galleries showcasing autumn in art and beautiful portraits capturing the daily lives of people from the African diaspora.

Greek sweets and Croatian corn

Explore stories of food from the social media strand of our Online Creative Residency!

Corn is a plant that has always been used in Croatia for various purposes - economic, in the household and in food. One of the unique recipes of central Croatia was created precisely on corn, and it is called jagli.

Greek spoon sweets, or glyka tou koutaliou, are a sweet close to jams and marmalades, a technique originally used to preserve the fruits. These traditional sweets reflect care, hospitality and the culinary craftsmanship of women across generations.

Hunger, gingerbread, beer and red sauce

Explore the stories from our Online Creative Residency writing group!

‘Gingerbread - the art of resilience’ examines the history of the Beliczay family's gingerbread and wax casting workshop. ‘The beer god’ imagines a fictional scene where a new beer god stands before a jury of deities, asking to join their pantheon. ‘The bread of memory’ reflects on wartime hunger, using excerpts from the poems of Yiannis Ritsos. And 'Return to the Sauce' explores Corfu’s bourdeto - a paprika-bright fish stew - as a lens on memory, community identity and place.

Oysters - where, when and how

Discover the collage pieces created through the Online Creative Residency!

The collages respond to the fascinating and festive experience of eating oysters at a Christmas market in Riga, with a quartet of collages and a collage essay exploring personal and political beliefs, creative process and digital residency itself. You can explore the collage pieces and read the story in English and Russian.
